Facilities and Planning: U, R, and W

September 16, 2011

A Facilities and Planning committee meeting was held Wednesday, September 14th, 2011. Hanna Israel (VP for Sustainability) and myself (Simon Fraser, Chief Justice) attended as the student rep. If you are a student who has spent a lot of time in departments housed in the W, U, or R buildings (a math student in R, or a chemistry student in U, for example), and are interested in how the development of these buildings goes, please contact Hanna Israel or Simon Fraser for an opportunity to participate.

Points to take away:

  • A new “Facilities Master Plan” will be drawn up that illustrates the direction for modernization of campus-wide systems, the U building, the R building, and the W building, seismic upgrades, and campus-wide sustainability.
  • Subgroups are going to form for each of these sections – each subgroup will be composed of interested parties from each area – students studying in those building, division deans and faculty currently living in those areas, etc.
  • We are looking to develop a new district sustainability policy to develop not just actions but also a culture of environmental sustainability. Part of this may include plans to get the campus ‘off the energy grid’ (I.e., generating its own power from sustainable resources such as solar energy).
  • Family-style, single stall and gender-neutral bathrooms are coming to PCC. Currently there are plans to include two in the new Center for the Arts, one on the first floor of the R building, and two in the Student Health Center which is moving now to the D building.

We are actively looking for student input on buildings and facilities, especially in the areas mentioned above. If you have questions, comments, input, feedback on any of these areas please feel free to contact us by email, or visit us in the Associated Students office located in CC105B (behind the wi-fi lounge).

Happy Building!

Simon Fraser, Chief Justice
